For the past few years I have created a ‘wish list’ of exhibitions that I want to visit in Switzerland. I usually share this list with friends but this year I want to share it with all my followers and anyone else who might be interested. It is by no means a comprehensive list so feel free to let me know what I’ve missed!
July Highlights
A wide range of exhibitions are closing this month. Don’t miss out on your last chance to see them.
June Highlights
Each month I will share with you a wide selection of exhibitions opening and closing in Switzerland. Hope you find this a useful resource. For more hints on exhibitions to visit, make sure that you are following me on Instagram @mostlymuseums.
Last chance to see in October & November
I have been lucky to see several interesting and inspiring exhibitions over the past couple of months. Some of these are closing soon and I’ve listed them here so that you don’t miss them.
Hermann Scherer. Grooves and Edges.
I first came across Hermann Scherer in the Expressionismus Schweiz exhibition at the Kunstmuseum in Winterthur. There is something about his bold style that draws me in. The vibrant colours of his paintings, but more so the wood sculptures. I was excited to learn that there would be an exhibition focusing on his sculptures and woodblock prints at the Kunstmuseum in Basel.
The Samurai Legend
I was excited to hear that the Bernisches Historishes Museum was to stage a special exhibition on the subject of Samurai. Like many people, I have discovered the samurai through film and popular culture. My idea of them is that they are fearless, honourable fighters who wear impressive armour and wield even more impressive swords! But just how accurate is this perception?
St Gallen Abbey Library
When I moved to Switzerland and heard about the St Gallen Abbey Library I knew I had to visit. It is quite hard to describe the experience of being in this special place.
North Korea. Insights into a hidden world.
There are currently two exhibitions featuring North Korea in Bern. I was intrigued to find out more and to learn about this ‘secret’ country.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Living Abstraction.
I was really looking forward to visiting this exhibition at the Kunstmuseum in Basel. It is the most comprehensive presentation of her life and career to date and the first to show the sheer volume and diversity of her work. But firstly, who is she?
Museum der Kulturen, Basel
I love it when an experience exceeds your expectations. I had this feeling last week when I visited the Museum der Kulturen in Basel for the first time. I knew about the museum from previous visits to Basel, but I hadn’t ventured in.
